After studying at Xian University of Architecture and Technology and later at Tsinghua University, Zhao Xiang worked at the Design Institute for the Ministry of Commerce in China for almost a decade. Afterwards, he went to Japan for further study, completing a Master's and PhD at the University of Tokyo. While in Tokyo, he worked for four years at the architectural firm Okada & Associates before becoming a professor at Fukuoka University. Xiang has served as both the school's Director and Dean of the Department of Architecture and Civil Engineering.
